Establish CI relationship to assess business capability

Assess the business capabilities within the indicator framework and based on the score you can make strategic decisions on the business applications that support the business process.

About this task

Each of the business application, business capability, business service, and business process has a unique identity as a configuration item (CI). Such a distinction helps to establish a relationship between these independent configuration items. The CI relationship helps to establish a parent-child relationship between business service and business capability, business process and business capability, and business service and business application.

The configuration items must be associated to a set of indicators to generate a weighted score for evaluation. In addition to the existing indicators to generate scores, preconfigured indicators such as people, process, and technology are also used to assess business capability.

The indicator scoring framework also supports scoring of business capability in addition to business application. Within this framework the preconfigured indicators including people, process, and technology, as well as the indicators that you have created, are evaluated to give the indicator scores. You can create a CI profile by associating the indicators and the scoring profile to the business capability and business application configuration items with a CI class attribute. Then generate the weighted score for each of these CI profiles.

Procedure

  1. Create CI relationships or edit the existing relationships using CI relationships in the CMDB.
  2. Use the following relationship types to establish a relationship between the CIs.
    Table 1. Relationship types
    Parent Type Child
Business Process Provided By::Provides Business Capability
Business Service Provides::Provided by Business Capability
Business Service Depends on::Used by Business Application
Note: Both the business process and the business capability are configuration item entities.

Example

Forecast to Delivery can be one of the business processes that your organization supports. There are many business capabilities that support this business process such as Supply Chain Planning, Warehouse Management, Demand Management, and Transportation Management. The business process capability map shows the Provides::Provided by relationship between the parent business process CI and the child business capability CI.
