Plan a sprint backlog

Move stories from the group backlog to the sprint backlog through the sprint planning board. You can also move stories from one sprint backlog to another sprint backlog.

Before you begin

Role required: scrum_sprint_planner, scrum_story_creator, scrum_admin

About this task

The assignment group makes its estimate based on a point system. A common approach is to use points as a relative measurement, with a single point being the smallest amount of effort which can be attributed to a well understood story. The scrum master uses this concept as a baseline for estimating other stories.

Stories for a sprint can be selected based on group ranking.

Make sure that the group capacity is sufficient to complete the stories in a sprint. Adjust the group size, adjust the sprint backlog, or create additional sprints to ensure the successful completion of all the stories you have committed to finish.

Procedure

  1. Open the sprint planning board using one of these options:
    OptionAction
    From Planning menu
    1. Navigate to Agile Development > Planning > Sprint Planning.
    From a group record
    1. Open the group record for which you want to plan the sprint.
    2. Click Plan Sprints in the related links.
    From a sprint record

  2. Select the Group for which you want to plan the sprint.
    • The group backlog is displayed in the left column.
    • The sprint backlog is displayed in the right column.
  3. Move stories between group backlog and sprint backlog.
    1. Select Group Backlog in the left column to show all the stories in the group backlog.
    2. Select the Sprint in the right column to which you want to add the stories.
    3. Select the required stories in the group backlog, and use the arrow buttons between the columns to move the selected stories to the selected sprint.
The sprint backlog in the right column is updated to display the stories based on the selections.
    4. Similarly, you can move stories back from sprint backlog to the group backlog.
  4. Move stories from one sprint backlog to another sprint backlog.
Usually, the committed stories for a specific sprint should not change during the sprint. However, the assignment group may not able to complete all stories to which it committed within a sprint. In such cases, the incomplete stories may be moved to a later sprint.
    1. Select a sprint in the left column from which the stories should be moved.
    2. Select the Sprint in the right column to which you want to add the stories.
    3. Select the desired stories in the sprint backlog, and use the arrow buttons between the columns to move the selected stories to the selected sprint.
  5. Use the gauge in the upper portion of the right pane in planning board to ensure that the total story points in the sprint do not exceed the capacity of the group.

Result

After the scrum master establishes the sprint backlog in the planning board, and makes sure that the team capacity is sufficient, the sprint is ready for work.

What to do next

The group members can manage their stories and tasks within the individual records, or from a progress board. The scrum master can use the Scrum Master Dashboard to view the sprint progress.
